New layout and framework

I'm trying to figure out a new design for this site. I wanted to separate the blog and the link/bookmark aspects, and also put stronger emphasis on my personal pages (many of which are currently neglected).

I'm playing around with Plone right now, and it's actually pretty flexible and seems like it will be a good fit. I don't like that it's so "heavy", i.e. it sits on top of Zope which gets called from Apache. I do like that it will allow me to seemlessly present a blog (via "News" items) alongside a rolling list of links while keeping them separate. The calendar is a nice little feature that I might use. The coolest thing is that since it's all written in Python, I can easily write new portlets to do whatever I want - hook into del.icio.us or show my latest forums.14853.net comments, etc.

If you have a suggestion for a framework I should try, please leave a comment.

Changes to combat blogspam

Since more and more blog spam has been appearing on my blog, I've implemented several of the tips from Yoz Grahame's tips for a spam-free blog.

One of the biggest changes is that you can no longer post a comment directly from the main page. To add a comment, you will need to click on an entry's title to view the details, then add a comment from that page. (One of the advantages of this is that you don't have to deal with a pop-up window to add a comment.)

If an entry has comments, the number of comments is displayed at the bottom, as before. However, this is no longer an active link to the comment page - you will have to view the entry details to read the comments.

Ton of Firefly stuff

I have uploaded three high-quality episodes of Firefly that were never aired on US TV. They are:

Trash (script)
The Message (script)
Heart of Gold (script)

Here is the script for "Dead or Alive", an unproduced episode. Also, this link indicates that Fox is releasing the Firefly DVDs on December 9th. Yay!!!

New layout

I've just updated the main electrictao page to be a combination of the blog and my "personal" site (that used to exist at electrictao.net/peter). The layout is 100% hand-crafted CSS, and the biggest known issue right now is that, for some reason, Safari doesn't render it correctly. (But both the XHTML and CSS pass the W3C validation pages!)

Update 7/14: I've fixed most of the problems Safari has been having, and the layout looks good on my two most-commonly-used browsers: Opera and Safari.
