Reality TV
A brilliant Joy of Tech today. Especially apropos given the current economic situation. I wonder when they're going to start having a reality TV/high-tech startup show. Take 8 or 10 geeks straight out of college, throw them into a loft in NYC or California, have them working on a new gadget or a new computer game. The best part: you can get another 8 or 10 geeks and make them work on a competing product. The teams get to bring their products to market and the winning team wins $3mil or $5mil in VC funding.
Allow me a minor rant about the current administration. Here is a brief news article about Bush and Ari Fleischer citing a non-existant economic study that supports his tax cut proposal. And they wonder why we don't trust them?

And for those who haven't seen it, Rex the Runt, another, slightly less tame claymation series from Aardman Studios. (Note that the link only points to the first episode.)
I got an excellent idea for all my friends with too much free time: do-it-yourself Airplay. Sadly, Airplay no longer makes their product, so a home-rolled solution is in order. Don't know what Airplay is? Watch this video.

CNN reports that a Michigan student was given the choice of removing an anti-Bush shirt or going home.
Read full entry...Here is a eurekalert article about research that shows that 9-month-old infants, when exposed to Mandarin Chinese spoken by a person, can differentiate between phonetic elements of the language, while infants exposed to DVD or audiotape recordings of the exact same sounds cannot. The findings seem to indicate that social interaction is critical to helping infants learn what is their "native" language and what sorts of sounds they should learn to pay attention to.
The Weekly Standard has a nice editorial refuting all the stupid claims made by the "antiwar types":
These arguments are all very nice, except that they don't argue for why we should go to war. Saddam is a dictator. Saddam sucks. Saddam has bad weapons. OK. But what has changed between this year and last? And the year before?
If taking out Saddam is the next logical step in the war against terror, why doesn't Bush just say so (and not just say so, but offer some reasons as well)? Are there no more efficient purposes to which $9 billion/month could be spent in combating terrorism?
Read full entry...Every time we have war nowadays, there are people who oppose the war on the grounds that war is unjust, and there are people who oppose the war on the grounds that the particular war in question does not make sense. On our current Iraq issue, I am staunchly in the latter camp, and I am starting to become increasingly annoyed at "tree-hugging hippies" in the former camp that make me look like an idiot by association.
It's the difference between Kyle saying "Kick the Baby!", Wendy going "No! Don't kick the baby! Don't kick anything!" and Stan saying "Don't kick the baby, kick Cartman first!" I'm Stan, and the Wendys make me want to puke.

I had an idea last night while cruising the web. I think it's pretty good, so I would like any and all feedback.
UPDATE (2004-02-05): I've posted refinements of this idea in a more recent entry. If you are going to read this entry, please read that one as well, or just read that one.
